About Sodium benzoate

Name:Sodium benzoate
Synonyms: Benzoic acid sodium salt
Molecular Formula: C7H5NaO2
Molecular Weight: 144.10
CAS Registry Number: 532-32-1
EINECS: 208-534-8

Sodium benzoate (E211) has the chemical formula NaC6H5CO2. It is the sodium salt of benzoic acid and exists in this form when dissolved in water. It can be produced by reacting sodium hydroxide with benzoic acid.
Sodium benzoate is a preservative. It is bacteriostatic and fungistatic under acidic conditions. It is used most prevalently in acidic foods such as salad dressings (vinegar), carbonated drinks (carbonic acid), jams and fruit juices (citric acid), pickles (vinegar), and condiments. It is also found in alcohol-based mouthwash and silver polish. It can also be found in cough syrups like Robitussin. Sodium benzoate is declared on a product label as 'sodium benzoate' or E211.
It is also used in fireworks as a fuel in whistle mix, a powder which imparts a whistling noise when compressed into a tube and ignited fully.

FAQs of Sodium benzoate :

Q: How is sodium benzoate used in the food industry?

A: Sodium benzoate is widely employed as a preservative in food processing, where it inhibits microbial growth and extends product shelf life without affecting taste or odor. Common applications include beverages, sauces, pickles, and jams.

Q: What is the process for manufacturing sodium benzoate powder?

A: Sodium benzoate is synthetically produced, typically by neutralizing benzoic acid with sodium hydroxide, resulting in a high-purity, odorless powder. The product is then carefully dried and packaged in moisture-resistant bags to maintain quality.

Q: When should sodium benzoate be added to a product?

A: Sodium benzoate is often introduced during the mixing or formulation stage of manufacturing to ensure even distribution. It is important to add it before packaging to maximize its preservative effects.

Q: Where is this sodium benzoate manufactured and exported from?

A: This sodium benzoate is manufactured, exported, and supplied from China. The supplier adheres to international standards, delivering consistent food grade quality for global distribution.

Q: What are the benefits of using sodium benzoate in formulations?

A: Sodium benzoate provides effective microbial inhibition, ensuring extended shelf life, product safety, and freshness. It is odorless, colorless, and does not alter the flavor of the final product, making it ideal for sensitive food and pharmaceutical applications.

Q: Is sodium benzoate safe for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals?

A: Yes, sodium benzoate is recognized for its safety and efficacy in both the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, where it acts as a preservative to prolong the stability of creams, lotions, and medicinal syrups within recommended usage levels.
