About Hydroxypropyl cellulose

 Hydroxypropyl cellulose
CAS number [9004-64-2]

Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) is a derivative of cellulose with both water solubility and organic solubility. It is used as a topical ophthalmic protectant and lubricant.
Lacrisert, manufactured by Aton Pharma, is a formulation of HPC used for artificial tears. It is used to treat medical conditions characterized by insufficient tear production such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca), recurrent corneal erosions, decreased corneal sensitivity, exposure and neuroparalytic keratitis. HPC is also used as a lubricant for artificial eyes.

As a food additive, HPC is used as a thickener and as an emulsion stabiliser with E number E463. In pharmaceuticals it is used as a disintegrant,[1] and a binder,[2] in tablets.

HPC is used as a sieving matrix for DNA separations by capillary and microchip electrophoresis

Versatile Applications Across Industries

Hydroxypropyl cellulose serves as a multifunctional ingredient, widely incorporated in pharmaceuticals for controlled drug delivery, as a food additive for texture enhancement, and in cosmetics for improved product consistency. Its high purity and superior solubility make it a preferred choice in industrial and manufacturing processes, ensuring performance across various formulations.

Exceptional Stability and Shelf Life

With a guaranteed shelf life of three years and moisture content capped at 5%, this cellulose ether maintains its effectiveness over prolonged storage. The products packaging solutions, including HDPE bags with liners, safeguard against environmental factors, preserving quality and integrity from manufacturer to end user.

FAQs of Hydroxypropyl cellulose :

Q: What is hydroxypropyl cellulose and how is it manufactured?

A: Hydroxypropyl cellulose is a chemically modified cellulose ether produced from wood pulp. During manufacturing, cellulose undergoes a reaction with propylene oxide, which introduces hydroxypropyl groups, enhancing solubility and functional properties.

Q: How is hydroxypropyl cellulose typically used?

A: This product is widely used as a binder, stabilizer, thickener, or film former in pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, and various industrial applications, thanks to its water solubility and high purity.

Q: When should one use hydroxypropyl cellulose over other starch or cellulose derivatives?

A: Hydroxypropyl cellulose is preferred when high purity, excellent solubility in water and organic solvents, and neutral taste or odor are required. Its performance outshines many alternatives in tablet coating, food texturizing, and personal care products.

Q: Where does the hydroxypropyl cellulose sold by your company originate?

A: Our hydroxypropyl cellulose is sourced from high-quality cellulose derived from wood pulp and manufactured in China, meeting both technical and pharmaceutical grade standards for global distribution.

Q: What are the benefits of choosing hydroxypropyl cellulose for industrial and pharmaceutical applications?

A: This product offers versatile functionality, superior purity (99%), stable moisture content, and long shelf life, making it highly effective for controlled drug release, food texture improvement, and product stabilization across industries.

Q: How should hydroxypropyl cellulose be stored to maintain its quality?

A: Store hydroxypropyl cellulose in its original HDPE bag or drum with liner, in a cool, dry environment, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Proper storage ensures up to three years of shelf life.
