Product Description

Houseleek, or Sempervivum, a genus of herbs native to Europe. There are about 65 species, found chiefly in mountainous areas. The plant's fleshy, stemless leaves are arranged in rosettes near the ground. Its rose, white, yellow, or purple flowers grow on stems about one foot (30 cm) high.
The houseleek multiplies by sending out many small offshoots in the form of small rosettes. The plant is also known as hen-and-chickens because of the way the small young plants cluster about the base of the parent plant. The common houseleek often grows on roofs and walls of European houses. Its bruised leaves are sometimes used to relieve stings and burns.
Houseleeks make up the genus Sempervivum of the orpine family, Crassulaceae. The common houseleek is S. tectorum.
